Potatoes- We grow potatoes on the farm which will all be used to make Walkers crisps. The varieties of potatoes that are used are chosen to ensure that the crisps are always very white and also taste as you would always expect a Walkers crisp too!
We also have a livery yard on the farm where we provide stables and grazing for horses. The keeping of horses is for pleasure, but when my father first started farming in the 1950’s he used horses to carry out some of the farm work before tractors were widely used!
We have a herd of Red Poll Suckler cows. The Red Poll has been on the rare breed at risk register and we now keep these to help graze some of the areas of the farm that are in environmental protection. We hope that soon we will able to serve beef burgers made from our own animals.
There are some areas of our farm that we farm specifically for the environment. Some of these areas are cropped with mixes of grasses and flowers which we hope will be beneficial to insects and wildlife. We have created some walks around the farm which are open to the public and these also link into neighbouring villages to provide walks up to 6 miles long. These have been arranged with our local and county council.
We are members of Leaf (Linking the Environment and Farming) and this promotes the ideas of intensive farming whilst still caring for the environment, we take our role as a manager and carer of the countryside very seriously. We are also converting some of the farm into organic production and hopefully our first organic crops should be produced in the autumn. |
